Mock AMS Conference

The Mock AMS Conference is the capstone of our summer activities. It is intended to train our graduate students in communicating mathematics effectively.  In particular, it trains them in the tricky art of giving a successful twenty minute general audience research talk.  Such a conference typically lasts about two days, with roughly thirteen talks each day.  We have coffee breaks and try to encourage people to socialize over dinner,  just like at any other conference.  

At a Mock AMS Conference, first and second year students who studied during the summer for their qualifying exams might choose for their talk a subject covered on one of the exams and present several related problems.  However, a general talk on a favorite mathematics topic is also most welcome.  More advanced students typically talk in general about their research.

We expect that by the end of a doctoral program at UGA, a graduate student will have been able, through participating every summer in our Mock AMS Conference, to build a foundation for two most important talks that every mathematics PhD should be prepared to give: a talk about their research, and a talk on their favorite entertaining mathematics subject for an undergraduate audience.

We also invite the undergraduate students participating in our Undergraduate Summer Research Program to present at the Mock AMS Conference. For three years in 2015, 2016, and 2017, the undergraduate participants of the REU Wake/Davidson Experience in Number Theory Research (WADE INTO Research) also presented their results. We welcome the participation of any REU in the Southeast.
